Kobe Bryant already is a widely popular figure in China. His face is on television, his jersey on people’s backs. Now, his name now will be inscribed on the “Global Ambassador Award,” presented by the Asia Society Southern California, which recognizes Bryant as a humanitarian “building global bridges of good will through sport.”
Asia Society Southern California will honor Bryant on June 30 at its annual gala dinner in Los Angeles.
“It has been a privilege to work with so many young Chinese athletes, and young people around the globe,” Bryant said in a statement. “Sports truly is a universal language, and bringing together the youth of China and the United States through basketball is extremely rewarding.”
Bryant’s reach around the globe was evident at the Summer Olympics, where he was the focus of most Chinese. Last summer, Nike China launched a six-episode reality TV show called Kobe Mentu or “Kobe’s Disciples,” where finalists traveled to the U.S. and their experience learning about basketball from Bryant.
