NBA’s Top 10 Players 2009
Each year we bring you a new revised list of the NBA’s Top 10 Players in the league! The 2009 list contains some new names, along with some very familiar ones. Overall the list is solid. There were many good players that were close, but just could not quite crack the top 10. Melo, Paul Pierce, Iverson, T-Mac, Brandon Roy, Chris Bosh, Dirk. These are just some of the names that have a case but just are not good enough to get in. If you want to make a case for any of these guys feel free to in the comments.
Remember, this list is unbiased and is a true Top 10 list.
1. Kobe Bryant
Really who would be at the top of this list instead of the “Black Mamaba”? This year’s reigning MVP has his Lakers looking at a championship this season. His numbers are lower because of solid play from teammates, but his dominance is stronger than ever.
2. Lebron James
Lebron James continues to improve year in and year out, and looks to be the favorite for this year’s MVP award. The Cavs are playing like championship contenders mostly due to the merits of “The King”. You really didn’t think there would be someone else in the #2 spot did you? If Kobe is #1, Lebron has to be #2.
3. Dwayne Wade
You can make the argument that when healthy, DWade is as dominant a player on both ends of the court as King James. Let’s not forget also that it’s DWade with a championship ring on one of his fingers. People are quick to crown King James as the next “Best Player on the Planet”, but let’s wait and see if Dwayne Wade has something to say about that first.
4. Chris Paul
Very easily could have one the MVP award last season and still could win it this year. There’s no player in the league more important to his team than Chris Paul. And oh yeah, he’s even better this year than he was last year! Incredible! His competitive greatness has us thinking he could be the best point guard in the NBA since Magic Johnson!
5. Kevin Garnett
So much talk around the media goes to Paul Pierce and how great a player he is, but it’s Kevin Garnett who runs the show in Boston! His passion and intensity is second to nobody in the league, and just about any sport for that matter. He gets the job done on both defense and offense. And although he throws weird Dennis Rodman-like antics every once in a while, doesn’t deter from the fact that he’s the most dominating big man in the NBA right now!
6. Deron Williams
So much talk goes to Chris Paul, and rightfully so. But let’s not forget the leagues other dominating Point Guard Deron Williams! A combination of quickness and strength along with a beautiful jumper and amazing court vision this guy is moving up the list fast! He may not get as much media attention as other players being that he’s in Utah, but that has nothing to do with how great of a player this guy is!
7. Joe Johnson
By far the most underated and underappreciated basketball player in the NBA. But that will soon disapper as more and more people get to see the great talent that is Joe Johnson! Joe is leading his Atlanta Hawks to Eastern contention and causing those Boston Celtics fits! Joe Johnson always comes up big in important games and is deadly in the clutch!
8. Tim Duncan
He may be old, he may be ugly, and he may be on the most boring team in the NBA but he is still after all these years one of the leagues most dominating big man! Still averging “20 & 10″ every single night and keeping his San Antonio Spurs in contention and having teams all over the league worrying about those pesky spurs. The old man’s still got it!
9. Dwight Howard
Also in this year’s MVP talk, the self proclaimed “Superman” is an absolute beast and dominator in the paint! Not to mention one of the leagues best personalties and just an overall entertainment for all fans of the NBA. Howard may not win a championship this season, but he will continue to get better and better each year. Look for him to continue to work his way up this list!
10. Amare Stoudamire
Amare makes the end of this list because of his pure offensive dominance! He’s still not the greatest defensive player, but would be much better if he had any teammates that could defend! When Amare get’s going offensively, he’s as hard to stop as anybody! A great combination of an outside jumper along with great finishing ability around the rim!

Wade is the Best PERIOD! Any argument that you can make for LeBron over Kobe… You could argue Wade over Kobe… or any argument for Kobe over LeBron, you could argue Wade over LeBron.
For instance… LeBron is stronger and can get to the rim and finish…. But the truth is that Wade is a better finisher than LeBron when taking contact.
Another example… Kobe is a better shooter than LeBron. We could argue that Wade is a much better shooter than LeBron.
Kobe is a better defender than LeBron… for some reason this season, they are making it like LeBron is a great defender… Not true… he has gotten better but, for him to be compared to Wade and Kobe on defense?? Are you serious??
Wade and Kobe will always be more of a match than Lehype vs anyone…
Why does LeBron get so much recognition for his accomplishments than Dwight Howard? He is only an inch taller than LeBron!! LOL!! He jumps higher, and he is the only player in NBA history to average a double double his entire career.
The Bottom line is that Wade is averaging more points than Kobe and Lebron, more Assists than Kobe and Lebron, more blocks than Kobe and LeBron, and More Steals than Kobe and LeBron. And he is a 6′4 (On a good day) SG/PG.
As time goes on, we are going to realize that we are underrating the second coming of Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant (In his prime).
Kobe’s years are coming to an end, and alot of people are yelling LeBron, LeBron, but the truth of the matter is Dwyane Wade would more than likely be that guy… While both Kobe and Wade are ranked for what they have accomplished, LeBron has been ranked for his potential.
Let’s be honest with ourselves… Which is more entertaining, LeBron vs Kobe or Wade vs Kobe? For some reason Wade and Kobe always show up in big games… Especially against eachother. Okay, if you take the lane away from Kobe he is still a threat because he can hit the jumpshot…. If you take the lane away from Wade (Which is almost impossible) he will still hit that jumpshot and often draw a foul while doing so…
You take the lane away from LeBron, and you cause him to shoot… which is probably what the defense want him to do. He will hit a few if he is lucky, but we all know that he is the worst shooter of the three…
Wade leads Bryant and Lebron in Points… He leads LeBron and Kobe in Assists, he leads LeBron and Kobe in Blocks, and he leads LeBron and Kobe in Steals…. My question is, with a team as bad as the Heat, what more does he have to do to prove that he is one of the top two players in the league??

Wade is a better player than Lebron James hands down Lebron has freeloaded off of Wade’s two years of absence. Wade is a Finals MVP and NBA Champion. Not even by boy Kobe has that! Paul Higgins again just like these new age fans you base your basketball dungness on size, athleticism, and talent. Which is what Kobe and Wade have as well in my opinion better than Lebron. What he lacks that Kobe has is the lock down defense capability on the best player of the opposing teams hint Lakers vs Cavs twice this year Kobe locked him down twice further showing people why the league will be his for another five years. Then Wade because he has shown us on the grand scale in 2006 finals and finals mvp let alone have an amzazing scoring which was third after Jordan and Shaq and Wade plays better defense. Although Wade has a lot of waeknesses like Lebron they are fewer. Lebron has all you idiot fans that support him basing his claims off nothing where is the hardware that Kobe and Wade have. Great post I like a lot of your selections. The only difference is CP3. Chris Paul is a definite top 10 player. I would take him over all the point guards active in the NBA no exception….However I like and respect Tony Parker’s game…The only knock I have against Parker is his leadership…He needs to go to the front office and demand this team gets younger…He has the opportunity to put San Antonio back on the map in the next 2 years. Losing Luis Scola, and not picking up Michael Pietrus, who he knew from France years ago?? Finally him putting up with the whole Ginobilli drama. They need to go young a’la JR Smith possibly? He needs to step up and like KOBE demand some changes as the Tim Duncan era comes to a close. Chris Paul is playing with a bunch of soft knuckle headed players who do not appreciate the game. They are only interested in making a paycheck. It also looks like Byron Scott is trying to slip out of NO so he can coach the Lakers in 2010-11. The Laker job is his if Phil Jackson hangs it up. He will not change the system or staff.. He has the trust of Buss/ and former teammates Magic and Kupchak. CP3 Might be leaving with him??? Do not be fooled!
Unfortunately Andre Ig will be another Richard Jefferson. He fooled a lot of teams last year that did not realize he had more game than dunks. He will be a marked man this season so it will be interesting to see if he can improve his numbers? Lamar Odom is the wild card…This year he had a lot of thing to play for once he realized he could succeed. the death of parents, his baby and friends. The opportunity to show the world he could be a champion. I do not know if defending a title is enough motivation for him? I am sure Mitch Kupchak is struggling with the same issue? I guess we will see in the next few weeks. I do not think Tmac will ever be the same? It just seems like too much wear and tear on that body. His shot is great, but can he adjust his game like Kobe and attack at spots? Can he play with Artest, Brooks and Yao? It will be interesting to see. Paul Pierce is a great team guy, but not even a top 4 player in the league at his position. There are just too many great up and coming forwards in this league. If you are starting a team and only couldtake two celtics it would be Garnett and Rondo..Sad but true?

Folks dwayne wade is better than lebron james , who in my eyes is extremely over hyped. he is a great talent, very dominant,but people he has room to improve. dwade will end up dominating along with lebron and carmelo once kobe leaves.
Dwade already has a ring, much more clutch than lebron, and is better on both ends of the court.
The thing people dont get is that lebron is great, cant take anything away from him ( hes on of my favorite players) ,but until he can stop panicking and just tryna drive all the time, he will never have a complete offensive game. Now i know he has improved defensivly and as a shooter, but he relies on his size and physical gifts way too much, and needs to start mastering his craft. If he continues to play like this he will not be as good when he is older cause his body has taken all tht pounding and running, it will eventually come to a point where he cant run full speed up and down the court , and truck people and dunk on people. He is also the most beloved player in the league by the refs. He is hardly ever called for a foul , even though it is clear it was the foul. ( See Cleveland Caviliers vs Orlando Magic Playoffs 09 to see what I mean,or any Lebron game)People are already acting like he is the sliced bread of basketball and tht isnt that case right now. he is great, and all,but they are going overboard,with the “KING JAMES” thing. He can get to that point eventually,and will soon, but until then, can we stop this foolishniss about him being on Michael Jordan or even Kobe Bryants level. He hasnt one SSS in the pros so, he needs some rings,to prove hes really “KING JAMES”. Kings arent kings without a crown and some gold.lol

The rankings are based on talent level and potetntial. The only dispute I see with the current 2009-2010 list is the order from Dwade to K Garnett. Some say it should be Kobe Dwade K Garnett and then Lebron in terms of NBA Finals and Championships. Then some say it should be Lebron K Garnett and Dwade. The reality is most of us would start off with a solid guy up front like a Kevin Garnett possibly even over a Kobe, Lebron and Dwade due to his all around game. I will say this is a list for the CURRENT NBA players. Why Michael Jordan is on a list is cinfusing to me? Then you have a couple of guys at the end of the road Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, Shaq please be realistic. They were bobm in the days but not TODAY! The cream of the crop after the big $ (Kobe, Dwade, Lebron, K Garnett is the leaders of the lsing NBA Finals teams period. Hey they took their respective teams to the NBA Finals Dwight Howard and Dirk Nowitzki bring up 5 and 6 respectively. The the last four guys are the future leaders of historic franchises Starting in LA with Pau Gasol at number 7. The guy won an Olympic Gold, Silver medals and NBA Title. If someone else has those credentials that is a newcomer not Tim Duncan he is old!!!! Then at number 8 is Carmelo Anthony. he made huge strides but the reality is without Chauncey Billups he is nothing so be careful giving him to much credit yet! Then Number 9 and 10 are so close it can bebasically a tie. These guys are similar in style and build. they will bring home gold medals for the US and dominant. Sorry CP3 but Brandon Roy and Derron Williams are beasts. The honorable mention list is three of the young guns LaMarcus Alderidge is good! Derrick Rose showed us he is going to be big time in this league! Then finally young boy from the sonics in OKLAHOMA CITY is the real deal. He was on the US Olympic team and will be a star in this league. Do not get me wrong I love the legends but as the sun starts to set on Kobe and K Garnett these guys will be hitting the top 10 in 2011-2012 season. Lebron win a title so we can honestly get you in the conversation. Just the facts. Kobe has won the most big time Games in Basketball. He is the King! Like Tiger Woods and Floyd Mayweather. All of these guys are pretty untouchable until they retire. If Dwade wins another title and Kobe fades he will be Top Dog period! Everyone else has work to do. However if the Lakers repeat and Gasol has another 20 and 10 year, he will be heir apparent to the chair vacated by Kobe as top dog in the league….Just my opinion no bias just strictly looking at these guys resume’s an what they accomplished. I also look at what potential I see for them going forward. Kobe can only go down after this year. Leron it is a make it or Charles barkley number two year. if he does not win the title he may never do it like Karl Malone and Charles Barkley… Cleveland be very nervous with Delonte, Shaq and the circus soon to be the Cavs coming to a town near you….Have fun this year! Garnett we will see? He is also on the downslide. The guys with the most upside are Gasol, Roy, Williams Anthony and Rose…One of these guys will be top 5 in the next 24 months. that wil be nice to see who emerges from the pack!

For the most part, I can’t argue with the top ten. Dwight Howard, incredible athlete, but until he develops a low post game, he can not be on this list. Dirk Nowitzki definitely deserved to be on this list. Besides Kevin Garnett, there is no better power forward in the league than Dirk. Tim Duncan, you can’t leave him out, pure and simple he is a winner. Amare, he has stepped his game up, but he doesn’t deserve to be ahead of Steve Nash. If it wasn’t for Nash, Stoudemire’s success would have been 10x harder. Deron Williams is definitely my boy but two years from now, Derrick Rose will take that from him. Ray Allen is probably the best shooter this league has seen since Reggie Miller, and he can make a good argument for himself even though he doesn’t bring the flashy moves like others on this list. Gilbert Arenas would definitely be on the list if his shot selection improved. Last point, let Baron Davis buy into the system over there in Los Angeles, trust me, nobody wants to guard this man when the light comes on. I know I said that was my last point, but one last thing. Lebron needs to win championships until he can be mentioned with Kobe nor Jordan for that matter. Lebron is a totally different athlete compared to Jordan and Bryant. If I was 260, 6-9 and could handle the ball as good as iverson, I would be smashing the NBA also. Kobe has the killer instinct, and has had it his whole career. Even when he wasn’t knocking down huge shots, he had that look in his eye. Lebron, will sell a lot of tickets and make a lot of money, but won’t win like Bryant!
